Two therapists (one speech, one occupational) played with her for about an hour. Lillie did great and we found out she is not significantly delayed in any area (we kind of figured that already). She is "at risk" for becoming delayed in a couple of areas where she didn't score quite as high.

Her "Receptive Communication" skills were a little low. We know she can hear, but she isn't making the connection between sound and meaning yet, she isn't "looking for the source of the sound." They want us to get her hearing checked to rule out a physical hearing problem. The other area she had a lower score in was "Adaptive Self-care"...she got a lower score here partly because she isn't eating solids yet. The therapists said that's not really fair because she is getting the best nutrition possible and that shouldn't count against her, but it sort of does on the test (standardized testing is already affecting her). Since she does have a "week latch" the therapist gave me some exercies to do to strengthen her face muscles and get her ready for the spoon. She also taught me the correct way to introduce the spoon so we don't form bad habits from the start.

Not surprisingly Lillie scored very high on social skills, particularly adult interaction. She loves attention and she prefers people over toys!

She was within normal limits in every other area. Her "Fine Motor skills" scored on the low end of normal, and the therapists recommended occupational therapy once a week to help with fine motor skills and hearing skills. If we lived anywhere else, a therapist would come to our house for this. But they have no home-bound occupational therapist for Sumter County!! They have one Sumter County therapist, but apparently she isn't occupational, not sure what she is. So we don't know yet how far we'll have to go. We should know in a couple of weeks. I will be placing another call to the "boss" of the therapists though and seeing if I can pull some strings (we're friends with her parents and I spoke with her before the evaluation). Not likely, but I'm gonna try.

DIYDish

www.diydish.com

This is a cool new site about how to "do-it-yoursel" crafts!!! I've corrected the posts below. All Down syndrome is Trisomy 21. The 3 types are Nondisjunction, Translocation and Mosaicism. I have a call into the doctor's office to find out what type Lillie has (again). Apparently the nurse I spoke to before doesn't have a clue what she's talking about!!

Update: I looked at the report when we were at Dr. C's last week. It doesn't say which type, but it says that all cells have the extra 21st chromosome, which rules out Mosaicism, and it doesn't say that the 21st chromosome is linked to another chromosome, which rules out Translocation. So Lillie has Nondisjuction Trisomy 21...the most common form of Down syndrome. Now we finally know!

Trisomy 21

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Opusj6gFqoE/SvLxDsna6EI/AAAAAAAAAC4/rtb_2XFm3DY/s320/lillie01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400643948989048898" />
Lillie has Trisomy 21, the most common type of Down Syndrome. Our beautiful Lillie, born September 26, 2009, has Down Syndrome. In honor of her, I thought I'd tell you all a little something about Down Syndrome. You can learn more by visiting www.ndss.org.

Down syndrome occurs when an individual has three, rather than two, copies of the 21st chromosome. This additional genetic material alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with Down syndrome.

There are 3 types of Down syndrome. We do not yet know which type Lillie has. The nurse called and confirmed a positive diagnosis, but Lillie's doctor (who can actually understand the report) is out of the office for a couple of weeks, so we're waiting to learn more.

All Down syndrome is also called Trisomy 21. Here are the 3 types of Trisomy 21.

1. Nondisjunction is the most common type of Down Syndrome (95% of cases). It is caused by an error in cell division called "nondisjunction." Nondisjunction results in an embryo with three copies of chromosome 21 instead of the usual two. Prior to or at conception, a pair of 21st chromosomes in either the sperm or the egg fails to separate. As the embryo develops, the extra chromosome is replicated in every cell of the body.

2. Mosaicism occurs when nondisjunction of chromosome 21 takes place in one-but not all-of the initial cell divisions after fertilization. When this occurs, there is a mixture of two types of cells, some containing the usual 46 chromosomes and others containing 47. Those cells with 47 chromosomes contain an extra chromosome 21. Mosaicism accounts for about 1% of all cases of Down syndrome.

3. Translocation accounts for about 4% of all cases of Down syndrome. In translocation, part of chromosome 21 breaks off during cell division and attaches to another chromosome, typically chromosome 14. While the total number of chromosomes in the cells remain 46, the presence of an extra part of chromosome 21 causes the characteristics of Down syndrome.

The only way to know which type of Down syndrome Lillie has is through a chromosome study (blood test). That's been done, and we're waiting on the Doctor to let us know what the results are.

Pictures of Lillie

Taken this morning...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Opusj6gFqoE/StJ1cbszShI/AAAAAAAAACo/yKf36232bCM/s320/Lillie_02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391500835248359954" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Opusj6gFqoE/StJ1byL7FYI/AAAAAAAAACg/rCz0zB387Bc/s320/Lillie_01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391500824104605058" />

We have a girl!!

Lillie Marie was born at 12:43 am, September 26th. I got results almost immediately too.

The Matching Wallet

Here is the matching wallet I made for my new Wrangler purse.

Etsy

I opened an Etsy shop!! You ever have those days? Finally Daddy said he'd had enough and he wasn't going to church (we rarely miss church, but Daddy didn't have to preach anywhere this day). A few minutes later, after the kids had calmed down and stopped arguing, Daddy came out and said to change our clothes, put on walking shoes, and get loaded in the van. He took us to Cypress Gardens!! We had a blast. He then treated us to supper at Outback on the way home. Daddy didn't even turn his cell phone on the entire day! Daniel (the 7 year old) was cleaning out the dog pens and he fell down in, well, stuff that's found in dog pens. He brought his clothes in and put in the laundry room utility sink to soak...sounds helpful, right? Well, he put in a BUNCH of laundry detergent, turned the sink on wide open...then went to get a bath! Where was I? Around...trying to fix supper, supervise Philip getting in the bathtub with Daniel, etc. By the time I realized what happened, the laundry room, mud room, art studio, dining room and our bathroom were flooded with soapy water!!! The good news is we have vinyl floors, so they just got a good washing. The only damage was to the baseboards, and they're not that bad, just a little peeling paint in a few places. Praise the Lord!! Kenny arrived home shortly after I discovered the water. The boys greeted him outside with "Don't go in there." I had the rainbow vacuum out and he grabbed the shop vac. It filled both many times with water before we got it all sucked up and the floors dry. Daniel got a lesson on proper detergent usage and NEVER EVER leave the water running in the utility sink.

The Big Kill

My husband killed a 10 point yesterday!! He isn't a very large deer (but then Florida deer aren't large anyway), but his horns are huge! The kids learn really well with small "chunks" of information at a time. Each little book that goes into one of our lapbooks is just right for learning a little chunk. Then at the end of the unit, we put it all together in some file folders and we have review time. Then the kids present their masterpiece to some people, and they have review time again! It really reinforces the learning and helps the kids with presentation skills too.

Acrostic Poetry

At "Poetry Pals" time at the Library yesterday we learned about acrostic poems. After discovering how wonderful cloth diapers are, I could never go back to paper. Well, most of Philip's diapers were worn out. After all, they were nearly 7 years old and on their 3rd child...I think we got our money's worth out of them. Since I've learned to sew I decided I would make some new diapers for Philip. This picture shows some of them. They are pocket type diapers, meaning they have to have something absorbent added to the middle. Yet they come apart for easy cleaning and quick drying. I stuff them with prefolds I already had. And I had plenty of waterproof covers too. I spent less than $20 on material for a dozen diapers! I used Rita's Rump Pocket diaper pattern (free). I think they turned out so cute! I love them. The monkey fabric is my favorite. I've made 11 so far, and have enough fabric for 8 or 9 more.

Super Quick Clothespin Bags

I needed a clothespin bag in a hurry. Mine was literally falling apart. I have a terrible habit of leaving it out on the line, and the sun has just about disentegrated my old one. I found lots of great tutorials for sewing really cute clothespin bags, but I did not have enough time for them. So Audrey donated a shirt and I sewed the bottom closed, put it on a child's hanger and it was ready to use!

The weight of the pins stretched it a bit and it is now a little "longer" than when I took the photo, but it is still working well.

Update a few minutes later...I decided I don't like the stretch of the shirt bag. So I stole a pair of Philip's overalls. They had snap leg bottoms...I hate snap leg baby pants. They always pop open, it's so much easier to just take them off to change the diaper. So here's the new bag. I opened the door of our front loading washing machine to get out a load of towels, and this lovely little creature was sitting on the "seal" just inside the door. Apparently he found himself a spot where he wouldn't drown. I thought he was dead, but when I touched him with some tongs he moved! I got him onto a box and took him outside. I took the picture of him on the porch. Kenny said he's a glass lizard...I don't know about that, but he sure scared me and the kids! We don't know how he got in the house, but obviously I picked him up with the load of towels!

After a little research I identified my little friend. A "glass lizard" has no legs and therefore looks like a snake (though it really is a lizard), so that couldn't be it. I believe it is a "Southeastern Five-Lined Skink." Compare it to this picture.

Mini Patchfolio

I bought this great pattern from CraftApple. I made this Little Artist Drawing Case (pattern from CraftApple) and a cloth grocery bag to match. I "wrapped" the case in the bag, and had nothing to throw away!

I added twistable crayons and a drawing pad to the drawing case on my way to the party. The little boy loves the drawing case, and Mama was thrilled to get the bag, she uses it as her purse.

The bag is from a couple of tutorials at craftster.org (Grocery Bag and handle tutorial) and used a plastic grocery bag as the pattern. The bag I can make cut to finish in under 30 minutes!!
